"...features what many consider Howard's finest performance... Peter Finch, Elizabeth Allan and Denholm Elliott join him in transforming Sierra Leone into a province of Greeneland." Philip French, The Guardian

Trevor Howard plays Scobie, expat senior policeman in wartime Sierra Leone. He's unhappily married to Louise (Elizabeth Allan) and while she is away he begins a love affair with the recently widowed Helen (Maria Schell). However, Scobie is tormented with Catholic guilt. And when the Police Commissioner announces he is to retire Scobie learns he is not chosen to replace him, but rather a younger man (Denholm Elliot) is being sent out from England. Adapted from Graham Greene's 1948 novel of the same name.
