New York Dolls: All Dolled Up (Bob Gruen, USA, 2005)

  • The Star 47 Chester Road London, England, N19 5DF United Kingdom (map)
Manhattan’s New York Dolls has been upheld ever since as a quintessential cult band ahead of its time. “All Dolled Up” is a wonderfully intimate on- and off-stage portrait that sees the quartet going from brash, optimistic kids to jaded veterans.

Screened in tribute to David Johansen (1950 -2025)

The New York Dolls are one of the most influential bands of all time. Without them... well, punk would probably still have happened - but it almost certainly wouldn't have been the same punk we remember now. Over a period of three years in the early 70s filmmaker Bob Gruen shot 40 hours of footage of the New York Dolls - from early ramshackle gigs in front of a handful of people to becoming a well-oiled (or at least drug fuelled) band playing to adoring packed houses. For any lovers of pop culture, this is a fascinating behind-the-scenes peek at not only a vanished band, but a vanished period of time.
