Dark Star (John Carpenter, USA, 1974)

darkstar
A berserk combination of space opera, intelligent bombs, and beach balls from other worlds.
— Roger Ebert

John Carpenter's debut feature is a hilarious riposte to the serious sci-fi movies that 2001: A Space Odyssey epitomised as four astronauts' deep space mission goes off the rails. Time Out called it "arguably the last great hippy movie with its jokey references to drugs, the Absurd and California surfing". Carpenter's co-writer Dan O'Bannon went on to write Alien. A true cult classic.
