The Graduate (Mike Nichols, USA, 1967)

It’s consistently fleet and funny, even as it probes the heady abandon and looming hangover that typified the decade of discontent.
— Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York

We had planned to show something vaguely Christmassy for our last film of 2014, but following the death of Mike Nichols it now seems only proper to screen his brilliant satirical comedy,The Graduate.

In his breakthrough role Dustin Hoffman plays the titular grad who's trapped in affair with Anne Bancroft's Mrs Robinson (the wife of his father's business partner). Things get more complicated when he finds himself falling in love with her daughter, Elaine (Katherine Ross).

The Graduate remains one of the most loved fils of the 1960s, not least because of the songs of Simon and Garfunkel.
