Thieves Like Us (Robert Altman, USA, 1974)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
In many ways, Thieves Like Us is Altman’s best work yet, his most stringent and evocative.
— Jay Cocks, TIME Magazine

Screened in tribute to Shelley Duvall (1949 - 2024)

Keith Carradine stars as Bowie, an escaped convict who, along with fellow ex-cons Chicamaw (John Schuck) and T-Dub (Bert Remsen) embark on a crime spree across Depression-era America. While in hiding between bank jobs Bowie meets and falls in love with Keechie (Shelley Duvall), who makes him reconsider his chosen way of life... Adapted from Edward Anderson’s novel of the same name (which also supplied source material for Nicholas Ray's 1948 film They Live by Night) Thieves Like Us is a great lesser-seen Altman, with a supporting cast that includes Altman-regulars Louise Fletcher, Bert Remsen and Tom Skerritt.
