Screened in tribute to Lynne Reid Banks (1929 - 2024)
A 27-year-old French woman, Jane Fosset (Leslie Caron), takes the titular L-shaped room in a run-down Notting Hill boarding house. Beautiful but withdrawn (and pregnant) she encounters her fellow lodgers, each a social outsider in their own way, including a gay, black trumpeter, Johnny (Brock Peters) and struggling young actor, Toby (Tom Bell). Adapted from Lynne Reid Banks' novel of the same name, The L-Shaped Room is a classic kitchen-sink drama, includes support from Pat Phoenix and Anthony Booth, and unsurprisingly, was a big influence on the young Morrissey - who sampled a snatch of song from the film to open the Smiths' Queen is Dead album.
