All that’s ever mattered about The Lion in Winter are Hepburn and O’Toole, and the pleasure we take from watching two masters inspire each other to greatness. Scenery chewing has rarely been so artful.

Christmas 1183 and the relationships between King Henry II (Peter O’Tool), his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), and their three sons (Anthony Hopkins, John Castle and Nigel Terry) are tumultuous at best. Political intrigue, family rivalry, and shifting loyalties unfold as they vie for power and succession. The film earned Hepburn her third Oscan and is fun slice of 1960s escapism.
