The King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese, USA, 1982)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
Sometimes manic to the edge of lunacy and, along the way, terrifying...
— Vincent Canby, New York Times

Robert De Niro stars as Rupert Pupkin: a wannabe stand-up comic, so desperate to make the big-time that he resorts to stalking his comedy idol, talk-show host Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis). There is brilliant support from Sandra Bernhard as Rupert’s equally unhinged Langford uberfan co-conspirator, Marsha and Diahnne Abbott as Rupert’s childhood crush, Rita. A box-office flop at the time of its release, The King of Comedy is now largely (& rightly) considered Top Tier Scorsese.
