Don Siegel's cult crime flick feels like a retroactive homage to the first half of Tarantino’s career, setting off as Reservoir Dogs, turning in to Jackie Brown and then taking a detour into the realms of Pulp Fiction and True Romance (arguably the greatest film Tarantino never directed!). It starts with the titular Charley Varrick (Walter Matthau), his wife Nadine, and two accomplices performing a bank robbery that goes south in lightning speed - and then proceeds to go even further south when the survivors of the ill-fated raid realise that they’ve robbed a bank that was laundering money for the Mafia…
