The Duellists (Ridley Scott, UK, 1977)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
The richness of Scott’s visuals, the excellence of the performances and the depth of the themes combine to make a minor masterpiece.
— David Hughes, Empire Magazine

Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel star, respectively, as Armand d'Hubert and Gabriel Féraud - a pair of Napoleonic soldiers, whose trivial quarrel escalates into a lifelong grudge. As wars rage and the years pass, the officers repeatedly challenge one another to violent sword and pistol duels - even when the initial cause of their rivalry is forgotten. Based on a short story by Joseph Conrad, The Duellists was the feature directorial debut of Ridley Scott and won the Best Debut Film award at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival. Supporting cast includes Albert Finney, Edward Fox, Robert Stephens and Tom Conti.
