Onibaba (Demon Hag) (Kaneto Shindo, Japan, 1964)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
Onibaba is a chilling movie, a waking nightmare shot in icy monochrome, and filmed in a colossal and eerily beautiful wilderness...

Halloween Screening

While her son, Kichi, is away at war, a woman (Nobuko Otowa) and her daughter-in-law (Jitsuko Yoshimura) survive by killing and then looting samurai who stray into their swamp. Upon learning of Kichi's death his widow begins an affair with a neighbor (Kei Satô), but her mother-in-law is jealous and plots a bizarre revenge... Kaneto Shindo’s Onibaba is both a jidaigeki genre film (Japanese period dramas that depict the lives of the samurai, farmers, craftsmen, and merchants of their time.) and a chillingly erotic horror that is as beautiful as it is unsettling.
