The Bad and the Beautiful (Vincente Minnelli, USA, 1952)

A warts-and-all portrait of Hollywood at its zenith, a tale of how the bad created something beautiful.
— Derek Malcom, Observer

A belated tribute to Kirk Douglas who died in February 2020 aged 103. This was the last film we had planned before lockdown ended all our screenings for 16 months so we’re delighted to bring back to our schedule.

Kirk Douglas stars as Jonathan Shields: a tough and ruthlessly ambitious Hollywood producer, whose rise and fall is told in flashback through the eyes of various acquaintances - including writer (Dick Powell), director (Barry Sullivan), and movie starlet (Lana Turner). An ode to old-style movie-making, The Bad and the Beautiful is melodrama at its most confident and an unblinking insight into the ugly egos that have shaped Hollywood history.

Please note: as we ease back into things post-lockdown, seat reservations are mandatory. Please contact us to save yours.
