Beau Bridges stars as Elgar Enders: a wealthy young WASP who buys an inner-city tenement with the intention of evicting the present occupants in order to construct a luxury home for himself. But as he interacts with his low-income, streetwise black residents, his values and attitudes begin to change - much to his family's consternation. Hal Ashby's directorial debut displays the wit, warmth and quirky world-view that made him a legend of 70s New Hollywood.
