“Crackles with allusive life and fire in its tender and agonized telling of an extraordinarily characterful tale.”
Adapted from Henry James's Washington Square, The Heiress stars Olivia de Havilland as the eponymous heroine, who falls in love with a handsome young gent (played by Montgomery Clift), despite the objections of her emotionally abusive father (Ralph Richardson) who suspects the man of being a fortune hunter.
De Havilland deservedly won the Oscar for best actress and the film triumphed in three other categories - Costume Design, Art Direction and for Aaron Copeland's haunting score.
