Debra wants less Al Pacino and more Bill Murray at film club. She also recalls her mum sneaking her into The Exorcist and a chance encounter with Richard and Judy.
Which film that you voted for are you most annoyed has lost the vote?
The Man With The Golden Arm lost out to The Panic in Needle Park. I don’t think there’s been a Frank Sinatra film shown yet at the film club, but boy Al Pacino has had more than his fair share of attention!
What’s a favourite film of yours you’d love to see at film club?
To be fair, you have already shown a lot of them. I like anything with Cary Grant in it and a quirky old film of his is a comedy called Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (it was remade as The Money Pit in the 80s) and has some very funny lines and scenes.
Tell us a theme and three choices you’d put up for the vote.
Laughter is the best medicine. Someone who always makes me laugh is Bill Murray, so here are three of his films. One of them is a bit of a cheat as it’s a documentary about Bill - Tootsie, Quick Change, The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From A Mythical Man.
What’s your earliest memory of going to the cinema?
As a child, my older sisters used to take me to the cinema regularly on a Saturday afternoon and two of the earliest films I remember seeing with them are On Her Majesty’s Secret Service - the shock ending was a bit much for a nine-year-old - the tears rolled down my face. I also remember my Mum taking me to see The Exorcist, and sneaking me in (I don’t know how she managed it) when I was erm… 13. My reaction was slightly different to that film!
What’s your most memorable cinematic experience?
I went to my local cinema to see Titanic when it came out. It was a Sunday afternoon and I was the only one in the screening room until Richard and Judy walked in with their kids. Luckily Richard didn’t talk all the way through the film.
What was the last film you saw outside film club and would you recommend it?
I think the last film I managed to see at the cinema before lockdown was Uncut Gems. I nearly walked out at the beginning, but I’m so glad I stayed. It was really unsettling the whole way through, but Adam Sandler was brilliant and again another shock ending!
