Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray, India, 1955)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
It is a pastoral poem dappled with the play of brilliant images and strong, dark feelings, a luminous revelation of Indian life in language that all the world can understand.
— TIME Magazine

When impoverished priest, Harihar Ray (Kanu Bannerjee), leaves his rural Bengal village in order to pursue his writing ambitions while hopefully providinf for his family, his wife, Sarbojaya (Karuna Bannerjee), is left to look after their brood: rebellious daughter, Durga (Uma Das Gupta), young son, Apu (Subir Bannerjee) and elderly aunt Indir (Chunibala Devi). As their parents suffer the daily indignities heaped upon them, the children enjoy the small pleasures of their difficult life, until the film's true central character emerges: Apu... Pather Panchali (Father Panchali), was Satyajit Ray's debut feature film, the first part of his "Apu Trilogy" and an all-time classic of world cinema.
