Mulholland Drive is pure cinema - a gorgeous, noir-narcotic loop of heartbreak in the “dream place” of Los Angeles...

As chosen by Nigel as part of the TPFC 10th Anniversary Celebrations!

A BBC critics poll in 2016 named Mulholland Drive the greatest film of the 21st century and in Sight & Sound’s Greatest Films of All Time poll in 2012 it came in at number 28. It might be even higher when the 2022 list is revealed later this year…

A love story in the city of dreams . . . Blonde Betty Elms (Naomi Watts) has only just arrived in Hollywood to become a movie star when she meets an enigmatic brunette with amnesia (Laura Harring). Meanwhile, as the two set off to solve the second woman’s identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project.

Combining many of the director’s favourite themes, David Lynch’s seductive and scary vision of Los Angeles’s dream factory is a modern classic, a tale of love, jealousy, and revenge like no other.

For those who’ve never seen Mulholland Drive, prepare to have your mind blown. Repeat viewers will no doubt unlock new theories about Lynch’s dreamworld.
