Les Amants (Louis Malle, France, 1958)

The film established Moreau’s screen persona - commanding, wilful, sultry… the combination of highly pleasurable body language, Brahms on the soundtrack, and the ravishing, velvety monochrome photography of Henri Decaë proves hard to resist.

Screening in tribute to Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017).

Louis Malle’s second film reunites him with Jeanne Moreau as a middle-class wife and mother who is bored with her life. Bust she is awakened when she meet Bernard (Jean-Marc Bory), a younger man with whom she embarks on an affair.

On screen throughout, this is the film that helped make Jeanne Moreau a star.
