Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, USA, 1980)

raging_bull_6.jpg
The most obvious basis for the film’s claim to greatness lies in Scorsese’s devastating critique of the very codes of masculinity that shaped him as a filmmaker, and in Robert De Niro’s performance, through which that critique is made flesh.
— Amy Taubin, Village Voice

Robert De Niro stars as Jake LaMotta, the Italian-American middleweight boxer whose obsessive rage, sexual jealousy, and animalistic appetite destroyed his relationships with his wife (Cathy Moriarty) and well-intentioned brother-cum-manager (Joe Pesci). With a screenplay by Paul Schraeder and filmed in luminious black n white, Raging Bull is visually stunning and one of Martin Scorsese's finest films.

Screened in tribute to Frank Vincent (1937-2017) and Jake LaMotta (1922 - 2017)
