Shakespeare Wallah (James Ivory, UK, 1965)

...this out-of-the-ordinary picture...quiver[s] with irony, sadness and benign resignation to change.
— New York Times

Felicity Kendal’s British actress enjoys a brief encounter with Shashi Kapoor’s Indian playboy as her family's theatre troupe performs Shakespeare plays to a dwindling audience as it travels across post-colonial India.  This early film from Merchant Ivory Productions is based on the Kendal family’s real-life experiences as “theatrical missionaries” and stars Geoffrey Kendal and his wife Laura Liddell as fictionalised versions of themselves, as well as Madhur Jaffrey in one of her first roles, with music by Satyajit Ray.
