Day for Night (François Truffaut, France/Itay, 1973)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
Day for Night is universal in its sheer humanism, its exuberance, its tragic-comic view of people and events, and completely irresistible in its sheer love of the life it leads.
— Judith Crist, New York Magazine/Vulture

Truffaut stars as Ferrand, a committed film director struggling to complete his latest movie, while coping with a myriad of personal and professional crises among cast and crew. The movie in question is a clichéd melodrama, and the cast includes aging screen icon Alexandre (Jean-Pierre Aumont), former Italian diva Séverine (Valentina Cortese) young heartthrob Alphonse (Jean-Pierre Léaud) and British actress Julie Baker (Jacqueline Bisset) who is recovering from a nervous breakdown... Day for Night is a witty and (largely) affectionate peek behind the film-making curtain and was nominated for four Oscars, winning the award for Best Foreign Language Film.
