The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Ronald Neame, UK, 1969)

  • The Lord Palmerston 33 Dartmouth Park Hill London, England, NW5 1HU United Kingdom (map)
This one really is the crème de la crème of Smith films. Give this film to a cinemagoer at an impressionable age, or any age, and he or she is a Dame Maggie fan for life.

Screened in tribute to Maggie Smith (1934 - 2024)

Maggie Smith stars as Jean Brodie: a free-spirited teacher at a Scottish girls' school during the 1930s, who prefers to teach her young pupils about love and art rather than cold hard facts. However, her controversial teaching philosophy draws the ire of the school's headmistress, Miss Mackey (Celia Johnson), and, as Miss Brodie becomes entangled in a love triangle, her behaviour towards her favourite students becomes increasingly manipulative… Maggie Smith deservedly won the 1969 Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Muriel Spark’s greatest creation.
